Biking gets harder at this time of year.

I do wear a helmet, though. And ear muffs.

Whac-A-Mole Day in Not My Small Diary!

Here's another contender for the greatest comics anthology of all time: Not My Small Diary! And there's a brand-new issue, featuring over 50 comics artists sharing stories from their high school days. Cool cover by Jess Smart Smiley. In my story, you will learn what the heck Whac-A-Mole Day is, and you'll probably be inspired to start celebrating it yourself.

The Greatest of All Time!

Not the greatest comics anthology of all time, but . . . The Greatest of All Time Comics Anthology!
I did the cover, and you can get one from Ninth Art Press.

(What would the greatest comics anthology of all time be? RAW? Comix 2000? Coober Skeber 2?)

Kickstarter skateboard update #1

I had my birthday last week, so now I am an even-older 39-year-old skateboarder! I am excited that the project is going well so far.

I made this flyer to help get the word out about my project to more people. I've started putting some up around the Boston area. If anyone wants to help me out by putting up a flyer at a skate shop or park in your local area (or wherever you think would be appropriate), I would really appreciate it! You can download a printable PDF in a variety of sizes:
Tabloid size (11 x 17)
Letter size (8.5 x 11)
Half-letter (2 to a page)

Thanks a lot!
Dan

SCBWI Winter Conference 2013

I'm psyched to have my artwork representing the upcoming SCBWI conference in New York! See you there?

This image was originally a going-away card for my friend and fellow artist Dave Kiersh who set off from Boston in search of adventure!

MICE is coming!

I saw my poster up at Brookline Booksmith last night! Woo!

Download a hi-res poster and print your own!

I am sad to say that I will not be at MICE this year. But you should still go! Bob Flynn will be representing Heeby Jeeby Comix, and I know he would love to see you! He's going to tell me all about it afterwards.

Don Freeman Grant

I'm very excited to have won the SCBWI's Don Freeman Grant this year! Many thanks to the judges and the SCBWI. (Official announcement)

Don Freeman was the author-illustrator of Corduroy, Dandelion, Mop Top, Skitzy, and many other wonderful books. You can see some great photos of the man himself and some cool art work on his official web site.

You're Not Too Old

This is a message to myself (and anyone else who wants to claim it for themselves!), painted on my most recently busted board. Here are some process shots. As always, click to zoom.

Alice in the Land of Wonderful Pangolins

The Team Cul de Sac art auction is now open!
Bid on mine here

or Bill Watterson's if you've got the dough!

R. Sikoryak's is my favorite

Team Cul de Sac is a tribute to cartoonist Richard Thompson and a benefit for Parkinson's research. Richard is definitely my favorite daily cartoonist working today. His lively, imaginative drawings and characters have been an inspiration to me. I hope that he will be able to keep drawing for many years, despite having been diagnosed with Parkinson's. I am honored to be a contributor alongside so many amazing artists.

There's also a book collecting all the artwork.

MeCAF ReCAP

So . . . MeCAF was a blast!
Here's Bob and I at our table. (photo by Renée Kurilla)
Once again, we drew FREE MONSTERS for anyone who asked.

Keith asked for "awkward bigfoot," so that's what he got!

Loren created the Monster Works for us, which fed us ideas for our monsters like "ear muffs," "nose hair," and "big knee caps."

SURPISE BALLS

"Huh . . . what are 'Surpise Balls?'"
"I guess I'll reach into this box and find out . . ."
"AUGH! It's a ferocious killer cat! AAAAAH!!!"
. . .
And that's how Butters will get you.
Watch out!

Breakin' Disaster

I made this in Flash about ten years ago, and finally got it up on YouTube today! Not the smoothest animation ever, but I still like the gag. I'm hoping to make a new animation soon.

Exploring a New World

This was my entry for the poster contest at this past weekend's NESCBWI conference, and I was psyched to get second place in the "Published" category. (Check out Russ Cox's first-place poster. Wow!) I had a great time and met lots of wonderful people. Thanks, everyone!

Check out Casey Girard's Octo-Pus in Boots sketchbook which I doodled in at the conference, alongside an all-star cast!
